  • Google Tips and Tricks #7: Citing Sources

Posted by Keith Tramper at 12/16/2016 2:30:00 PM

Teaching students to give creative credit when they utilize a source to gain information is an important part of being a digital citizen. Thankfully Google Docs has a few nice features for making this process easier than the way that we learned it. Give them easy access to citing sources without tripping over proper citation.

  • Google Tips and Tricks #6: Revision History

Posted by Keith Tramper at 11/29/2016 4:30:00 PM

Did you know you can click on “All changes saved in Drive” at the top of any Google Doc to see the Revision History of your document?

    Revision History Screenshot

    Review Major Changes

When you click on a date/time on the right side of your screen, you’ll see all the changes made in that revision. The highlighted colors are associated with the person who made the edits. In the screenshot above you can see that Thang’s edits are highlighted in Green and mine are highlighted in Brown. The arrows at the top of the screen let you jump through the edits that have been made on the document. If you’re looking to see more minor changes, click on “Show more detailed revisions” at the bottom of the page.

    See When Changes Were Made

Did you require that an assignment was due by Midnight on Friday? Now you can see if students had it completed by that time and what changes they may have made after the deadline. You can also see what they accomplished during their class time.

    Rollback Previous Versions

Did someone get into your doc and screw it all up? Not only can you tell what changes were made, who made the changes and when they made them, you can go back to a point in time when it wasn’t a mess and restore it. Just click on the revision you like and choose “Restore this Version”.

    Draftback Chrome Extension

Want to get really fancy with Revision History? Try the Draftback extension to play back all of the edits that you made on a document and get more data on how changes were made. It’s actually pretty fun!

  • Google Tips and Tricks #5: Know Your Sharing Settings

Posted by Keith Tramper at 11/4/2016 3:05:00 PM

While Microsoft Word shines in building beautiful documents, Google Docs shines in its shareability. Rather than tracking down the most current version of a document, everything is kept up-to-date in one place, regardless of who’s modified it. To take full advantage of sharing in Google Docs, understanding sharing settings is key.
